Denny Hamlin has voiced his agreement with NASCAR’s decision to end the Cup Series race at Atlanta on Sunday with a caution. In a recent episode of his podcast, Actions Detrimental, Hamlin explained that while some fans may not have liked the decision, it was the safest choice under the circumstances.
“It was the right call,” Hamlin stated. He acknowledged that fans who enjoy high-energy finishes might disagree, but emphasized the safety risks if the race had continued. “If we keep these races green, someone could get seriously hurt,” he added, noting that drivers are vulnerable when they are on the track while others race by at high speeds.
This caution followed a similar situation during the Xfinity Series race the previous day, where drivers raced through a debris field, which NASCAR later admitted was a mistake. NASCAR’s vice president of competition, Elton Sawyer, clarified that in such cases, like the one on Sunday, the race would indeed be stopped for safety concerns.
Hamlin recognized that this call might seem inconsistent with previous decisions but stressed the importance of prioritizing driver safety. “A caution means there’s an unsafe condition,” he concluded, urging for consistency going forward.
