The Boston Red Sox are facing a dilemma at third base following the recent signing of Alex Bregman to a three-year, $120 million contract. Rafael Devers, who has been the team’s primary third baseman since 2018, has expressed his reluctance to move from the position, stating, “Third base is my position. It’s what I play.”
Manager Alex Cora acknowledged the complexity of the situation, noting that changes in the front office have influenced team decisions.
Defensively, Bregman holds an advantage, having earned a Gold Glove in 2024 with the Houston Astros, while Devers has led the league in errors since 2018.
Despite the potential for conflict, Bregman has taken a team-first approach, stating, “I’ll play wherever.”
First baseman Triston Casas has publicly supported Devers retaining the third base position, a stance that has drawn criticism from some commentators.
An MLB executive suggested that Devers’ desire to maintain positive relationships with teammates might lead him to eventually accept a position change. As spring training progresses, the Red Sox will need to address this positional challenge to optimize their infield configuration for the upcoming season.
