Kansas City Chiefs vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Sunday, February 02, 2025 – 06:30 PM ET at Caesars Superdome
Hurts and Barkley Lead the Charge
After a close win over the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional playoff round, the Philadelphia Eagles absolutely stomped their division rival the Washington Commanders 55-23 in this year’s NFC Championship Game.
The Eagles were absolutely dominant on the ground. QB Jalen Hurts and RB Saquon Barkley each had three rushing TDS in the win. Barkley started the game off with a statement when his very first carry was a 60-yard run for a touchdown. From there, the stage was set, and Philadelphia’s elite offensive line play and passing on 3rd down was too much for the Commanders’ defense.
The Eagles came into this game with questions about the health of Jalen Hurts but he looked much better than he did the week before against Los Angeles. Hurts looked slow and immobile in the game against Los Angeles but the week of rest definitely provided him adequate time to heal. Hurts looked spry and fast while evading the pass rush and scrambling to pick up yards.
Hurts being back at 100% means this Philadelphia Eagles team is at full strength.
Ground and Pound
The Eagles are a powerhouse team based on winning in the trenches and they will have that advantage against Kansas City. The Eagles have an excellent offensive and defensive line and were able to win at the line of scrimmage in all three of their playoff wins. The Eagles will look to dominate up front again against Kansas City.
The Eagles definitely rely on their rushing attack. They are second in the league in rushing yards per game at 179.3. Yet they are 30th in the league in passing yards per game at only 206.9. Regardless, it is a successful formula because they are 7th in the league in points scored at 27.2.
The Eagles have the top defense in the league in yards allowed at 278.4. They are second in the league in passing yards allowed at 192.1. This matchup will be crucial because the Chiefs love to move the ball through the air, and will be looking to attack the Eagles in this manner.
Chiefs Back in the Big Game
I didn’t feel like the overall NFL fan base was happy with the results, but the Chiefs are in the Super Bowl once again. And once again, they played a very close game in which a couple of key plays and a couple of huge calls went in their favor.
Some will point to the Chiefs’ luck, but at this point, you just need to include it in your handicap.
The Chiefs offense looked excellent against the Bills. They achieved 28 first downs and had 368 total yards, 245 of those were through the air. QB Patrick Mahomes looked to be his best self, and his receivers made plays. First-round draft pick WR Xavier Worthy changed the game with his six receptions for 85 yards.
Worthy is one of the fastest players in the league and his speed will be key in this matchup. Even when Worthy does not receive the target, his game-breaking speed forces the safeties to account for him, which opens things up underneath for his teammates. Xavier Worthy’s development has been key to the Chief’s offense this season.
Ground Control
Even with RB Isaiah Pacheco back in the lineup, RB Kareem Hunt received a bulk of the rushing work in the NFC championship game going for 17 attempts and a touchdown.
Hunt’s ability to still be a potent threat on the ground gives the Chiefs a nice two-headed attack when he is combined with Pacheco. Also, in the playoffs, the Chiefs are not as concerned about limiting the hits on their star quarterback and Patrick Mahomes was a key part of the rushing attack when he rushed for 11 attempts, 43 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Although Mahomes makes sure to protect himself during the year, with the season on the line, Mahomes turns into a dual threat quarterback and this is something the Eagles will need to account for in their preparation these next two weeks.
The Chiefs have been strong against the run this year. They are 8th in the league in rushing yards allowed at 101.8. This is going to be the pivotal battle for the game.
Key Matchup: Philadelphia’s Run Game vs. Kansas City’s Run Defense
The Eagles do not want to get into a through-the-air shootout with the Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes is simply too good.
The Eagles are going to want to dominate time of possession and win on the ground. Their offensive line has been excellent all season, even against the top defenses. Chiefs’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnola will have his hands full making sure the Eagles do not move the ball too easily on the ground.
If the Chiefs are able to shut down or even slow down the Eagles vaunted rushing attack, they will have a great chance to win the game. If the Eagles are able to establish this game on the ground and get out to a double-digit lead., they could win their first Super Bowl with Jalen Hurts.
The Pick
As boring as it is and as much as this will upset fans, I have to go with the Kansas City Chiefs once again. They had a much tougher path to get to the Super Bowl by beating Buffalo instead of Washington. The Chiefs are battle-tested in tight games and always come through with the game on the line.
The Chiefs offense continues to improve throughout the season and they have not shown their best plays and their best offensive attack yet. The Chiefs will continue to improve on offense and I trust their stellar rushing defense to hold up against the Eagles.
Everyone at your Super Bowl party is going to be mad but you can have some money in your pocket when you bet the Kansas City Chiefs.
