The Golden State Warriors have ventured into the music industry by launching their own record label, Golden State Entertainment, making them the first NBA team to do so. Their debut album, “For The Soil,” was released last week, featuring prominent Bay Area artists such as E-40, Too Short, Saweetie, G-Eazy, Goapele, LaRussell, and Larry June. The album’s release coincided with the NBA All-Star festivities held in San Francisco.

Filipino-American rapper P-Lo, who produced the nine-track album, performed during an NBA All-Star tipoff party on February 13. A lifelong Warriors fan, P-Lo began working on “For The Soil” last summer, prior to the Warriors’ championship victory. The project was spearheaded by David Kelly, the Warriors’ Chief Legal Officer, who has a background in the music industry as Capital D of the Chicago rap duo All Natural. The Warriors partnered with distribution and publishing company EMPIRE to release the album.

While other NBA teams have collaborated with musical artists, the Warriors are the only team with a dedicated record label.
