Atlanta Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins is expected to part ways with the team within the next month, and the New York Jets have emerged as a potential destination. ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported on “SportsCenter” that the Jets, who previously showed interest in Cousins, might pursue him once he becomes available. Fowler noted that with the NFL Scouting Combine approaching, discussions between Atlanta and Cousins’ agent are imminent to determine his future, especially with a $10 million roster bonus due on March 17.
The Jets, having moved on from Aaron Rodgers, are in need of a clear solution at the quarterback position. Their previous pursuit of Cousins in 2018 was unsuccessful, as he signed with the Minnesota Vikings. Despite a 5-12 season, the Jets possess talent on both offense and defense, which could appeal to Cousins.
Cousins lost his starting role with the Falcons late last season to rookie Michael Penix Jr., primarily due to turnover issues, including 16 interceptions over 14 games, though he amassed 3,508 passing yards. Concerns about his recovery from a 2023 Achilles injury were dismissed by the Falcons. The 36-year-old quarterback, who signed a four-year, $180 million contract with Atlanta last offseason, is now fully healthy and believes he can continue as an NFL starter.
