The New Orleans Saints have announced a one-year contract agreement with running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, extending his stay with the team after joining their practice squad late last season.
Edwards-Helaire, 25, entered the NFL as the Kansas City Chiefs’ first-round selection (32nd overall) in the 2020 draft. Despite high expectations, the former LSU standout never quite found his footing in Kansas City, failing to reach 1,000 rushing yards or five rushing touchdowns in any season. His tenure with the Chiefs was marked by challenges in pass protection and ball security before being waived midway through the 2023 season after a stint on the reserve/non-football illness list. However, he did earn Super Bowl rings with Kansas City in both 2022 and 2023.
The Saints signed Edwards-Helaire to their practice squad in December 2023, elevating him for one game. He’ll now have an opportunity to compete for touches in a backfield that includes Alvin Kamara, Jamaal Williams, and Kendre Miller.
